P5P 50mg - 60 caps
Pyridoxal 5ā phosphate (P5P) is an active metabolite and predominant circulating form of pyridoxine
(vitamin B6). P5P is a cofactor for more than 100 enzymes. It is involved in the synthesis of
neurotransmitters and works with folate and vitamin B12 in the metabolism of homocysteine and
the formation of red blood cells. It is also required for enzymes that metabolize carbohydrates, fats,
and proteins. P5P facilitates the release of glycogen from the liver and muscles, which is used
in energy production. In addition, P5P helps to maintain the balance of sodium and potassium,
which regulates body fluids. This nutrient also promotes the healthy functioning of the nervous and
musculoskeletal systems.
P-5-P (Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate)
What It Is
P-5-P is the active, coenzymated form of Vitamin B6. Unlike regular B6 (pyridoxine), P-5-P is already in the form the body uses directly ā no conversion required by the liver. This makes it significantly more bioavailable, especially for people with liver issues or genetic variants that impair B6 conversion.
Primary Functions in the Body
1. Amino Acid & Protein Metabolism
- Acts as a coenzyme in over 100 enzymatic reactions
- Essential for transamination ā the process of converting one amino acid into another
- Critical for synthesizing non-essential amino acids
2. Neurotransmitter Synthesis
P-5-P is directly involved in producing:
| Neurotransmitter | Role |
|---|---|
| Serotonin | Mood, sleep, appetite |
| Dopamine | Motivation, reward, focus |
| GABA | Calm, anti-anxiety |
| Norepinephrine | Alertness, stress response |
| Melatonin | Sleep regulation |
3. Hemoglobin & Red Blood Cell Production
- Required for synthesizing heme (the iron-containing part of hemoglobin)
- Deficiency can contribute to anemia
4. Energy Metabolism
- Helps break down glycogen into glucose for energy
- Involved in gluconeogenesis (making glucose from non-carb sources)
5. Immune Function
- Supports lymphocyte (white blood cell) production
- Helps regulate inflammatory responses
- Supports interleukin-2 production (immune signaling)
6. Homocysteine Regulation
- Works alongside B9 (folate) and B12 to convert homocysteine into cysteine
- High homocysteine is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease
- Deficiency leads to elevated homocysteine levels
7. Hormone Regulation
- Modulates the action of steroid hormones (estrogen, testosterone, cortisol)
- Helps the body clear excess estrogen via liver detoxification pathways
P-5-P vs. Regular B6 (Pyridoxine)
| Feature | Pyridoxine (B6) | P-5-P |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion needed | Yes (liver) | No ā ready to use |
| Bioavailability | Lower | Higher |
| Best for | Healthy individuals | Those with liver issues, MTHFR variants |
| Toxicity risk at high doses | Higher | Lower |
Signs of Deficiency
- Depression, anxiety, irritability
- Brain fog
- Fatigue
- Weakened immune system
- Peripheral neuropathy (tingling in hands/feet)
- Anemia
- Elevated homocysteine
- PMS symptoms (in women)
Common Uses as a Supplement
- Hormone balance (especially reducing estrogen dominance)
- Mood support (boosting serotonin/dopamine)
- PMS and B6 deficiency
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Morning sickness during pregnancy
- Often included in B-complex or methylation support formulas
- Commonly stacked with Zinc for hormone and immune support
Typical Supplemental Dose
- 25mg ā 100mg/day is common
- High doses (over 200mg/day long term) can still cause peripheral neuropathy, so moderation is key even with P-5-P.
