Copper’s role in hair pigmentation is mainly through its function as a cofactor for tyrosinase, the enzyme that helps make melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. When copper is insufficient, tyrosinase activity can drop, melanin production can decrease, and hair may become lighter or gray earlier than expected.
How it works
Hair color is produced by melanocytes in the hair follicle, which synthesize melanin and transfer it into the growing hair shaft. Copper helps tyrosinase catalyze the early steps of melanin synthesis, so it is biologically important for maintaining normal pigmentation. Copper also supports antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, which may help protect pigment-producing cells from oxidative stress.
What the evidence suggests
There is evidence that low copper status can be associated with premature graying in some people, but the human data are mixed and not strong enough to say copper deficiency is the cause in every case. Genetics, oxidative stress, other mineral imbalances, and autoimmune factors can all contribute too. So copper is one part of the pigmentation picture, not the whole explanation.
