Ther-Biotic® InterFase 60 capsules
Biofilm consists of microorganisms encased within a self-produced matrix of exopolysaccharides and exoproteins that strongly adheres to interfaces and resists dislodgment. Microorganisms residing within biofilms are highly resistant to antimicrobials including antibiotics and bacteriocins produced by probiotics.
InterFase® is a unique enzyme formulation that is especially designed to disrupt the biofilm matrix that embeds gastrointestinal organisms.† Enzymes in InterFase® are selected for their ability to lyse the extracellular polymers commonly found in biofilm as well as degrade bacterial and yeast cell wall structures.† The enzyme blend in InterFase® was developed using in vitro testing of antibiofilm activity and was found to have significant antibiofilm activity resulting in meaningful degradation of undesirable biofilm communities.†
InterFase® is intended for use in conjunction with efforts to support normal gastrointestinal function and microbiota.† As an adjunct, it is best combined with use of a high-strength, broad-spectrum, multispecies probiotic formulation and a prebiotic to encourage the formation of healthy intestinal microbial biofilm communities.† The capsules should be taken away from meals to maximize the enzyme effects.

1. Digestion of the Biofilm Matrix (The "Shell")
-
Beta-Glucanase & Cellulase/Hemicellulase: Target and break down structural glucans and carbohydrate polymers that make up a large portion of the structural matrix protecting the microbes.
-
Chitosanase: Specifically targets chitosan, a tough polymer found in fungal cell walls and certain matrix structures.
-
Proteases / Peptidases (Endopeptidase, Exopeptidase, DPP-IV): Break down the structural proteins and glycoproteins anchoring the biofilm matrix together.
-
Serratia Peptidase & Lysozyme: Systemic and proteolytic enzymes that further hydrolyze peptide bonds in the matrix proteins and help lyse microbial cell components, destabilizing the slime layer.
2. Do They Digest the Fungus Underneath?
-
Targeting the Cell Wall: Fungi (like yeast) rely heavily on beta-glucans and chitosan/chitin for the integrity of their actual cell walls. Enzymes like beta-glucanase and chitosanase don't just degrade the biofilm slime; they can also attack and weaken the physical cell walls of the fungi protected beneath the biofilm.
-
The Limitation: While these lytic enzymes can structurally weaken, compromise, or "digest" components of the fungal cell wall and strip away its protective shield, enzymes alone are typically not considered antifungal agents that completely kill or clear a thriving fungal infection on their own.
What is the Purpose of These Enzymes?
-
Expose the underlying fungi so that the body's immune system, or concurrent antimicrobial/antifungal treatments, can actually reach them.
-
Significantly lower the resistance that biofilms typically grant to fungi against clearing agents.
